With the beginning of a new year, there have been a lot of positive changes in the Illinois Evans Scholars chapter. We said a temporary farewell to nine Scholars, as they start on their oversea journeys of studying abroad!
Senior Mario Cannistra and sophomore Ariana Rivera are currently enjoying their time in Spain. Junior Mackenzie O’Neil just left for an exciting semester in Prague, while junior Dave Varley is learning all about his roots in Ireland! Juniors Bailey Reisman and Sam Roche are having a blast together during their experiences in Rome, and sophomore Trevor Martinez and juniors Tressa Freberg and Lucas Buchacz are all exploring Belgium. We wish the best of luck to all our study abroad Scholars! We know they will be doing just as great overseas!
Our Illinois chapter also recently made history, all thanks to the hard work of the freshmen Scholars and previous Vice President of New Scholars Sam Roche. After returning from winter break, we learned that for the first time ever, all 32 of our New Scholars achieved a 2.5 GPA or above, to officially be recognized as Chick Evans Scholars. We could not be more proud of all their dedication! We hope to continue this academic excellence with upcoming classes. Not only have the freshmen done well academically, but they are currently working hard on raising money for the 2017 Law Enforcement Polar Plunge and Donut Dash, which raises funds for the Special Olympics. This philanthropy is a tradition every year for us, and we are hoping to raise the most money this year yet! On Feb. 25, the participating Scholars will plunge into a lake in Mahomet, Illinois, and have a goal of raising at least $100 each. Best of luck to our chapter! “Be bold and get cold”!
